I'm kind of curious about this because I'm headed on some long road trips this summer and I get a mix of responses when I tell people the shortest one is a 12-hour drive. How do you like to travel?
If long-distance trains weren't so expensive that'd probably be it for me, but I do love to drive. Set me on 1000 miles of road with good weather and as many hours of music and I'm happy. It's sort of a little vacation for me. On the other hand, I can't stand airplanes.
Short distance travel, my favorite is definitely the train. I'm going to Chicago soon so I get to ride all kinds of trains then!

Huh I never thought about my preferences in transportation modes. I guess that's because I hardly ever travel. I kinda hate all modes of transportation. I don't have faith in my ability to drive a car safely, and all other modes of transportation are either slow or requires me to sit among a group of strangers. I guess my favorite method of transportation is the metro train because it's easy, quick, and cheap. I've heard that the metro train where I live in DC is one of the best metro train services out there so this opinion might end up changing if I were to move to a different state or country. My second favorite would be airplanes I guess. Flying in the air is still exciting for me since I can only remember taking a trip using an airplane 4 times in my life.

Massive airplane hoe over here. The air pressure sucks and the wifi sucks harder, but it's about the excitement and adventure being on an airplane affords me.
For land, I also like subways, mainly because of the mystique of it all (because I live in an area with no public transportation, and even the grossest NYC subways are magical to me).

I guess I'm lucky because I've been on some really nice trains. The ones that come out of Albany are really good.
I've also had the chance to ride a trolley before and really liked it, maybe even more than subway. Certainly over the subways in NYC. People always talk about how impressive New York's subways are but literally every other city I've been in has had a nicer one.

Love me some airplanes, not gonna lie. I have to use airplanes to just travel in my own state alone, otherwise its nearly an 8 hour drive in some directions. Planes are just really nice and relaxing, its nice to have your head literally up in the clouds

After traveling a sleepless 30 hours (each way, mind you) on a train, it's obvious I hate trains very much. The experience might be more fun if I were making multiple stops and had a travel buddy with me, but for most part its safe to say I'd never step on a train again unless I HAD too. I never liked how cramped, shaky, and uncomfortable it was- mainly because my ass fell asleep too many times and I can't sleep sitting up.
Probably the same reasons exist for buses and airplanes too, granted, I've only traveled by plane once or twice in my entire life and only when I was younger so I wouldnt know how to judge it today. Though I would use plane to cross the country/travel overseas for how quick they are probs, lol.
Outside of that, I once rode a subway in DC and I enjoyed that very much for short distance!
MAINLY THOUGH, if I'm in the mood, I love to drive. I traveled back for fourth to Georgia a few times with takes 5 hours each way and I loved it. It's really easy to blast some tunes, grab a bunch of snacks and a buddy, and just go at it. Usually the time goes by pretty fast, and being able to stop and take a break where-ever is pretty liberating. It's my main choice 100%

Planes and trains for me! Specifically international flights though, because US airlines are honestly a whole lot worse than airlines in other countries. Even if the flight is only one hour long, European and Asian airlines will serve you a full meal that you can even customize for food allergies, while in the US, even if your flight is 7 hours long (ala NY to CA), they will only give you a crappy snack. There's also movies and even games you can play, and the Asian airlines have morning exercises and a lot of room in the aisles to walk around.
Also, by trains I mean above ground trains, not the subway bc god I really don't like the NYC subway haha. The LIRR and Metro North are pretty decent and relaxing, and there's a quiet car during rush hour. It's a little bit safer than the subway because of the ticket prices and security so if you fall asleep by accident it's not a scary as on the subway (once woke up to a police officer pretending to steal my phone out of my hand to prove a point, nearly shat my pants). I've never taken a long distance train like Amtrak tho so idk if I'd like trains if I needed to stay on them for 10+ hours ;;;;;

Mostly because the Detroit to Chicago railroad tracks are built like shit, there were stops because kids had death wishes playin' on the god damn tracks, as well as the complete lack of any sort of food options without having to pay like 3 dollars for a cup ramen (I didn't eat at all on that train ride).

Eep, I've never taken the Detroit-Chicago route. But the California Zephyr is really nice! Especially the segment from Denver to San Francisco, I just rode that one for the first time back in March. The only problem I have with the overnight trains is it's not easy for me to sleep in the coach seats (and I'm the kind of person that can sleep anywhere) and even the little sleeper compartments are pricey. And like Allie said, the food is ridiculously expensive. I got a sleeper compartment (which has meals included) for free that last trip -- one of the trains I was on a few years before set on fire and was something like 12 hours late, so they called me up and offered me a voucher.

I must be in the minority because planes are uncomfortable and they suck. It's too expensive to get a good seat too and you don't even get much of a good view on a cloudy day. That said, I'm a train person through and through. Maybe it's just cause I've had the pleasure on being on some nice trains. That said, sleeping on a train is the w o r s t.
Has anyone said anything about boats or cruise ships? Because I can't imagine being a fan of that either. You could probably get used to the rocking but if I had trouble sleeping on a train then sleeping on a boat would be even worse.

Aah, I entirely forgot how much I love traveling by boat (Colorado is very dry) but I got to go out on Lake Michigan again on my vacation <3 I hear traveling on a cruise ship on the Pacific is really rough though.

I love going in planes or boats. I like to feel the waves on boats its so relaxing to me x3 also planes are cool bc i let my imagination run wild while watching the sky and clouds from so close. Besides they are the fastest way of travel. Its sad they are so expensive tho, if i cant go on them, then train since idl driving or going in a long travel closed in a car.. i hate roadtrips xD but i enjoy long travels c:

Let's be real tho, if someone were to tote me around in a horse drawn carriage I would not say no. Shit's bumpy tho. I want to roll up in a Formula 1 race car or one of those cars that can break the sound barrier.
