Also old post but I'll put an updated version here:
A couple of music things I'd like to add here (that are all free (or trials))
Music:Anvil Studio: www.anvilstudio.com/ What is used for Kawaii Schoolgirl. It is easy to use though only uses the basic MIDI sounds. I think it can use 1 VST but I'm not sure.
Musicshake: eng.musicshake.com/ kind of like a doll maker but with music. A lot of automatically generated chords for loops. Your soundtrack might sound something like what comes out of Magical Girl School if you use this.
Finale notepad: www.finalemusic.com/products/finale-notepad/ I would say use anvil studio instead of this one because anvil studio is easier to use in my opinion... but I'm going to assume this one is a bit more flexible.
Soundation: soundation.com/studio a good starting point for a commonly used interface in my opinion, but doesn't have much potential with actually making music. Its browser based.
Buttonbass: www.buttonbass.com/ real simple, real easy to jump into, fancy, but I don't think there's an export option.
AudioSauna: www.audiosauna.com/studio/ another browser based music maker. I've never used this one but it looks good from looking at it.
Beatlab Audiotool UJAM: www.beatlab.com/ www.audiotool.com/app https://www.ujam.com/ujamstudio I literally just googled "free music maker" and found all of these so I don't know.
Incredibox: www.incredibox.com/ I-... I don't know if this counts anymore...
LMMS: lmms.io/ This one looks really promising but I've never actually tried it out. (heard it can't export midi files RiP) It also has more than just MIDI sounds but I still wouldn't know.
Famitracker: www.famitracker.com/ For making chiptune stuff or things you would hear in old video games, though it has a tough learning curve.
Music Demos:
Fl studio: www.image-line.com/downloads/flstudiodownload.html You can't save or open files with the demo version.
Magix: www.magix.com/us/music-maker/ All of these are trials which are limited time. Easy to use, hard to get around glitches. I would know lol.
Mixcraft: www.acoustica.com/mixcraft/download.php Also looks like a trial version. The Acoustica Instruments and Extended Acoustica Instruments VSTs are used a lot in Undertale and sound like fairly upgraded MIDI sounds.
Cubase: www.steinberg.net/en/products/cubase/trial.html The creator of this one is also the creator of VSTs from my knowledge.
Ableton: www.ableton.com/en/trial/ I heard this one is good. Never used it though.
VSTs:VST 4 FREE: www.vst4free.com/ my favorite free vst site for some reason. The VSTs aren't going to be amazing sounding because they're free of course.
Synth1: www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1-by-ichiro-toda This is just one VSTi but its really good.
There are so many VSTs out there and you can usually find free ones easily on google.
My favorites are TAL noisemaker plugin, The Anvil, Sonatina Choir, Sonatina Violin, and SQ8L.
As for SFX...www.freesound.org/ is all I use and all I need
