I am quite curious one how you guys used music. Do you make music on your own? Do you use royalty free music? Do you obscure anime/video game music? For me, I kinda go all over the place. Sometimes, I use very few copyrighted music that surprisingly does not give me a strike. I used the music that was used in this 4 part video [ starting here](sometimes I used audacity to get the same pitch that was in THAT video, lol). I used underground anime music (A.k.a., Di Gi Charat, lol). And on a VERY rare occasions, I make music for my fanimes! (With the ED of Penalty All About and Sour Candy Filled Donuts) I also used remixes Tenshi made for me! ^.^

I try to stick to exclusively royalty free music for commercial purposes in case I ever try to make money off my work, but I have shifted into some grey areas in the past (there are a few songs in Project: Unknown I know for certain are not royalty free). I think its a good habit to get into if you're trying to get into a professional work place one day so you can use all your work without having to worry. For less serious projects or completely passion based work I don't see a problem with using copyrighted music as long as you're careful and are aware your videos might end up being blocked in certain places (or in rare cases altogether).

My own.
Not only is this my answer but also partially other people's answers as well.
with one exception being the 2 hour challenge because I'm not making music and an animation within a 2 hour deadline.
and ditto Baphomet's comment.

Well people who make music for anime are far more professional than me.
I do try to go royalty free for a good project (read: not Tokyo Fetish Mew) but it does get hard when using certain royalty free music makes you sound like a YouTube vlogger.

it does get hard when using certain royalty free music makes you sound like a YouTube vlogger. Yeah, I have to do a double-take when I hear a song I was using for my work and it's being used by someone way more popular on YouTube. But I also think of it like using mainstream pop songs, sometimes several movies and TV shows will use the same song especially if it's really popular. I have composed my own music in the past, but more recently I've been buying royalty-free songs off sites like Audiojungle because I don't have the time

I mostly use musicshake for any background music I want to do and create my own stuff using that, or with more important things like openings and endings I look to Newgrounds for music free to use for web-based purposes.

I will try most of the time to make my own tracks for my series and I'll use some royalty free stuff here and there to save time.

Sometimes I make my own tracks on garage band or Musicshake. But when I don't I use soundtracks from magical girl series.

I think this question could also be taken in the way of what type of music you tend to prefer for your fanimes?
For example, a lot of my fanimes have very subtle music. I love piano tracks for the emotional impact they have, but also their simplicity can be eerie and creepy. I don't use a lot of 'happy' music in my work anymore, it's all got a pretty serious tone to it or is more melancholic in nature.

I use a little bit of everything genre-wise, but I have different sets of music for different projects. Hunting Shadows uses softer, melodic, emotional, piano and orchestral style music. Raventhorn is a little wilder and more action like, plus each hero or villain has their own music theme.
I like to structure an episode with music first, if I can, and then add voice overs and animations. I feel like that makes up for not being able to write scores to fit the visuals afterward, so I figure I might as well do it the other way around.
I'm not as good at making my own music as I'd like to be, so while I've used some of my own, I tend to use a lot of royalty free stuff. If you have some money to spare on music, Audioblocks has been a really nice goldmine for me. I use their stuff in almost all my videos. Sadly, they raised the price this year from $100 to $150, and while that's seriously cheap for unlimited stock music, it isn't too practical with a tiny budget like mine. ^^'

I use whatever music i think fits or i can get x3 i'll prefer create my own music but idk much of it yet tho i try and use sometimes. I experiment alot to create music, using from music programs online or not, video editing, voice changers, i even do music using videogames or irl sounds or acapella xD or do remixes of actual music if im lazy
But mostly i use music not mine. Famous or not. Copirighter or not Or i ask someone to make me music or to collab

I try to stick to either royalty free music or my own music. When I first started out animating, I only new very basic stuff about making my own music, so for my Art Block episode preview my friend was super nice enough to help me out and make me a short instrumental. For Ghost Heart I used royalty free music because I do hope to someday use that series for commercial use. As for Cosmic Sugar I just used Bee and Puppycat/Animal Crossing music because it was part of a challenge.
But for awhile now I've been teaching myself how to make my own music and even invested in my first midi keyeboard, and so far I really enjoy the process and I hope that I can give my series some decent soundtracks!

I get most of my music from Jamendo. They have a huge selection under various licenses for free, personal licenses are cheap and it would be simple if I ever wanted to upgrade to commercial. Other than that I use Free Music Archives, royalty free channels on Youtube and Musopen for when I need classical music.
