Hello everyone! I'm making a piece for Fanime Zone that takes an in-depth look at fanime and the community. I'm seeking to include as many definitions and explanations as I can without the video dragging on. I really want this to have as many hands in it as possible, as the goal here is to create a video that can be pointed to for those just starting out in the community and those trying to explain fanime to someone.
This video will NOT be one concrete definition, but rather a collection of thoughts to try and define fanime to the best of the communities abilities. I'm aiming for something approachable and easy to watch, a 4-5 minute range is best.
Any definitions or comments used will be credited accordingly to the user that expresses them, so if you're using a definition that you found somewhere else I'd love for you to link to that as well!
And again, this is also a discussion piece. Feel free to respond to each other and talk away about what fanime is (and it NOT) in your opinion.
Thank you!

Fanime is, to me at least, someone inspiring to create their own original series with their own characters. Of course fan series of existing media are welcomed into the community as well. It doesn't have to be drawn in an "anime" style to be considered a fanime, it can be drawn in any type of art style.

Besides having a series in wich you have creative control and where you can show your characters and ideas to the world, fanime is considered fanime if it's inside the community-there are many autonomous animation series on youtube that are not considered fanime. One has to classify their series as fanime, since an anime style is not required to make a fanime, and creators can just decide to make their work "not fanime".It's pretty hard to define it,but any animation or novel that contains a story(or at least a comical setting, like in troll fanimes) can be considered fanime, but I don't think there is a specific definition. Yikes.

Over the years, I feel that the definition of fanime has changed drastically. At the beginning, fanime definitely had a distinct style and purpose. I felt that back around 2008-2010, fanime was mostly centered around the magical girl genre and was primarily created by people new to the concept of animation using tools such as Windows Movie Maker and MS Paint. While not every fanime fit those limitations, the majority of them did. In more recent years, I think fanime has become more generalized and inclusive of any genre, art style, and animation approach. Anything can be classified a fanime if the creator calls it such. It's not limited like it used to be; it's diverse. www.cartoonbrew.com/anime/everything-you-need-to-know-about-fanime-93393.html This is an article from 2013 that explains the concept of fanime to an audience who may not be familiar to the term. It isn't necessarily the most positive review, but it acknowledges the younger, up and coming generation of animators that have their roots in fanime. Since this article is almost four years old, it might be a little outdated and irrelevant to what fanime is today, but it's nice to take a time hop and see what people thought about it in the past!
